Progression Agreements

Helping students to aim higher

LRC AreaThe sky’s the limit for City College Birmingham students, whatever route they take to getting qualifications.

Local universities have agreed to look at our students with vocational qualifications when considering them for entry from courses in Early Years and Health & Social Care - as well as those who studied Access to HE.

The college has official "Progression Agreements" with the University of Birmingham, Birmingham City University, Aston University, The University of Wolverhampton, University College Birmingham and the Open University to support those considering progressing to higher education.

Progression agreements are drawn up between networks of colleges, universities and private training providers - and recognise the value of vocational qualifications.

Progression agreements highlight entry requirements relevant to study programmes that students are already undertaking.

City College Birmingham became involved in the agreement because, historically, we know that vocational students have not progressed to higher education as easily as their counterparts doing A-Levels.

Universities are now becoming more aware of the value of vocational qualifications such as BTEC Nationals.

Learning resource centreAt the beginning of this academic year, we took students to the "Birmingham Roadshow" held by the Lifelong Learning Network at Birmingham City University.

This raised their awareness of higher education options and how progression agreements could play a pivotal role in their path towards further study and a place at university.

Kathryn Boyd, Progression Agreements Co-ordinator at City College Birmingham, said: "We’re very pleased to be involved with the scheme on behalf of our students".

"There is often a debate about the value of going to university versus other routes such as going into employment, but at City College Birmingham we’ve always recognised the value of both".

"The important thing is that people have options which enable them to take the right path as an individual".

"We would like to thank the participating universities for working closely with further education in this way, helping to continue Birmingham’s reputation as joined-up learning city which strives to meet the educational needs of all".
